Refocus Your Energy

Ways I have found helpful to reset energy

Recently, I have been coming into contact with people who have expressed that they “lost their creative energy,” are feeling ‘blocked,’ or that they have been experiencing depressive-like symptoms, and they wanted support with shifting the energy. Depressive-like symptoms may be expressed as feeling unworthy, unwanted, sad, general discontent, disconnected, loss of interest, or hopeless. Things may just feel off, or the person may simply not feel like themselves (I am sure many of us can relate to that).

These feelings and experiences can be triggered by several things, whether it's feeling as if you don’t have purpose, an event occurred, there is some absence in your life, you no longer have a routine or structure in your life or some unknown reason that you can’t quite put your finger on. Regardless of what the reason is, please know that nothing is ever wasted, not even those moments of sadness, or discomfort.

With each emotion or experience, there is a message there for us, no matter how deep or surface level; there is an invitation. I wanted to create a blog post to share some ideas on things you can do, or refrain from doing, to refocus your energy and give yourself an energetic reset (because it’s all energy).

BUT… pause 🙅🏾‍♀️

Before we go any further — can we celebrate your awareness for a moment?!

Shout out to you for bringing awareness to the experience that your energy feels a bit off, or different, from what you view as your norm. Whether you noticed that the energy shifted inside you, or you realized it through your bad mood, negative thoughts, low energy, lack of motivation, or feeling stuck…

The first step is always awareness.

When you are aware of the energy, you can feel into that discomfort, acknowledging its presence. You don’t have to accept it, or even judge it, but know that it is present, and observe it. You can check in with yourself to see if there is anything you can pinpoint as the trigger(or cause) to this experience, if not, don’t worry about it or overthink it. Better to use your energy towards shifting your energy.

Here, you want to find what’s doable for you at this moment. Remember, no need for judgment. Allow yourself to be where you are and work from that space. This can mean that, if all you have the energy to do is practice deep breathing, start there. Then maybe, you’ll go for a walk or stand up and walk in place, who knows… just be with yourself in the present moment; you need you right now!

Okay… so here it goes. This is a list of ways in which you can reset your energy. If any items on this list spark something in you, may you allow it.

These suggestions are all invitations, check-in to see if any of them are for you. 😊. Things I have found helpful to reset energy:

Slow Down & Check-In: Sometimes when we feel discomfort, our first response is to be reactive and find a way out of it by “doing,” but what if this is an invitation to be. An invitation to slow down, and check-in with yourself. Evaluate what is happening around you… did you get off course? Have you been distracted from your path? Have you been subconsciously approaching life, in survival mode? Check-in with yourself. This may be a time to slow down, and take inventory.

Ask Yourself What You Need: In the slowing down, take a moment to ask yourself what you need right now. It may sound simple, but sometimes the solution is that simple. A matter of tapping in and allowing your wisdom to reveal what it has been trying to communicate all along.

Don’t Pressure Yourself to Snap Out of It: Sometimes when we have these seasons of feeling dim or in a funk, it may be an invitation to just be. Give it 3 days. This has been so helpful for me, and I encourage you to give it a try. The reality is, these feelings or moments don’t stay, they will pass. And everything is Divine… trust that something great is on the other side, and allow yourself the space to live through the discomfort. No need to rush, Love. It’s all Divine timing.

Breathwork: This is often my go-to for everything. Breathe and come home to yourself. The power of breathing feels so magical sometimes because it can take you from disconnection to full awareness. Feel into your body and see what messages it has for you. Deep breathing lowers heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and turns on our parasympathetic nervous system, the part of our body responsible for calming us down.

Music: Oh, how music has been my medicine many times. Music has the ability to tap into our emotions like nothing else. I remember one day I felt sad and had no idea why, then Hearts by Jessie Ware came on my playlist, and the moment the lyrics played I felt the tears welling up. I then started singing the song out loud, and I cried. Put it on repeat, and cried again. I felt so much better.

Music is a gift to us and medicine. You can use music to help you emote your energy (e.g. to help you cry it out when you are feeling down), or to change your mood altogether (e.g. putting on happy, upbeat music to help get you out of a mood funk). Feel free to incorporate music with some other things; let the creativity run.

Have a Dance Party: Sometimes physical movement is the key. Put on some music that inspires you to dance, and go for it. It doesn't matter if you’re not a dancer, just get moving. Imagine that the dull energy is being shaken off of you and in its place is your light illuminating you. This is your time baby, let that light shine bright. (Think about it: even when it’s cloudy out, the sun is still there)

Walk: Yup intentionally take a walk. There are even workouts on youtube for you to walk indoors. Walking, and even general exercise is a great way to get energy moving and reduce stress in the body. For my friends with fire heavy in their chart, I highly recommend you adopt intentional movements into your daily routine; you can thank me later.

Yoga/Stretching: Again, get that body moving and let that energy move with it. Whether you go to the studio or do it from guidance from a youtube video, if you feel called to it, trust that you’ll get what you need. I’ve recently been introduced to Yin Yoga and this slow-paced yoga has allowed me to feel the energy move throughout my body, so I can pinpoint areas of tension and stagnation.

Nature: Head to the park or just outside and get some fresh air. Bring awareness to the sounds of nature, and the trees, flowers, and water streams-- whatever you have nearby. If you are at the park or anywhere with grass, bring a blanket and lay down. Or take off your shoes and engage in earthing (bare feet on the grass). Allow nature to remove any dense energy in and around you, and replenish you with the energy of life. See, energy doesn't die, it transmutes, so as much as we are shaking dense energy off, we’re allowing love and ease to come through. Nature does great things for the brain and Spirit, allowing it to be a guide to your reset. P.s. Don’t forget to give thanks.

Take a Shower: Please do not underestimate the power and gift of water. Put the water at a temperature that feels comfortable, and hop in. As you are in there, be intentional as you wash your body. Give thanks to the water, the time you have to care for yourself, and the tools you’ll use in the shower. If you have a favorite soap scent, shower wash, or body scrub, use it. If you have a spray scent that usually lifts your spirits, spray the bathroom with it. You want to create the good vibes and transmute the energy that feels heavy and is weighing you down.

Hydrate: YUP, I said it! Have you a nice glass of water. If you’re feeling a little extra, add fruit or lemon to spruce it up. This is a great thing to do as soon as you wake up.

Nap: Because sleep is a great way to reset things.

Gratitude: The practice of gratitude is a life changer. Sometimes remembering the things that are bringing you happiness, joy, or comfort in your life, helps to put the things that are creating discomfort into perspective. There are many ways to practice gratitude, and I'll share three.

You can do this any time of day, I’ve used it as part of my morning and night routine, and sometimes in the middle of the day when I need to get anxiety in check: (1) write out 5-10 things you are grateful for, (2) speak 5-10 things you are grateful for, or (3) do an audio recording for at least 2 minutes, of all things you’re grateful for.

The audio one is great as part of your rising routine. I typically do it before I start my morning pages. In addition to saying what you’re grateful for, consider adding to that audio, your daily desires as if they already happened (Today, I was so happy when….) and your future desires as if they’ve already happened (I’m so happy to have the job of my dreams doing…). In both cases, go into detail! Talk about whatever matters to you. I started doing this audio after a friend shared the concept with me. It was a game-changer. The first time I engaged in the audio process it shifted my whole mood, I was shocked and full of gratitude. May it support you in a way that will expand your experience.

Express Yo’ Self: Let it out!!! Talk, write, scream into a pillow, yell… let it out. That energy is feeling stagnant and is wanting to move… will vocalizing it help? Talking about your feelings with someone you trust and who can hold space for you helps release the space that those dense feelings are occupying, which are creating that heaviness and discomfort you are feeling. If you’re going to do this with a friend or family (in other words, not a professional whose purpose is to hear you out), consider giving them a warning and asking if they have the time and capacity to hear you out.

Better to be at war outside of yourself than war within. Say what you got to say; take up that space, Friend! Talking may not be the way, consider expressing yourself by writing a letter or doing an audio recording, because sometimes it’s just the act of the energy being expressed.

Take a social break: Sometimes too much stimuli can create a short circuit (LOL). Step away from social media and social connections, and allow yourself the time and space to be in your own energy for a while. When we are closely engaged with others' energy, it can affect our own, so be mindful of that. If you are out with friends or at the end of your night, call back your energy (especially if you feel a bit “out of it”) and breathe deeply; allow yourself to come back home to self, and move from that space.

  • As you engage in any of these habits or activities, pay attention to how you feel. If you feel comfortable, feel into your body, notice the shifts, and notice where there is tension. All of this is information and wisdom from your body that will be useful as you move forward.

  • And as you continue to care for your well-being, evaluate and take inventory of the ways you distribute your sacred energy and be intentional moving forward.

May peace, love, support, & compassion be part of your everyday life, and your interactions.

I love you.

Be well.
